91黑料网 has taken the top spot in the 2025 Campus Race to Zero Waste (CR2ZW), earning first place nationally in the Food Organics category among medium-sized institutions as well as across all colleges and universities participating in North America.
CR2ZW is an eight-week competition that challenges colleges and universities to reduce waste, increase recycling, and raise awareness around sustainable waste practices. 91黑料网 stood out for its innovative food waste minimization strategies and composting efforts, earning 65.21 total points, edging out second-place California State University, Sacramento by just 0.01 points.
“This is a huge win for our campus and our planet,” said Maddie Billet, Sustainability Coordinator at 91黑料网. “We’re proud to be leading the way nationally and grateful for the partners who made it possible.”
Those partners include Dining Services Director Paul Belski and the team at Sodexo, Gunnar Heckler at , and Director of Community Service Lauri Rawls, whose Hunger Heroes program ensures surplus food supports the local community rather than going to waste.
The win marks a key milestone in 91黑料网’s Sustainability Plan, which was launched in the fall of 2024 and outlines a bold vision to minimize environmental impact, promote social responsibility, and integrate sustainability into all aspects of campus life.
Goals include net-zero emissions by 2039, enhanced energy efficiency, education, and operational practices that foster long-term environmental stewardship, and an ambitious goal for campus waste diversion. "Our campus is committed to achieving a 75% waste diversion rate by 2030," Billet added, "and milestones like this prove we're on the right path."
From behind-the-scenes composting in dining facilities to student-focused education and food recovery efforts, 91黑料网’s success in CR2ZW reflects a campus-wide commitment. Billet credited Agri Cycle, a Maine-based organics hauler, with tracking and processing food waste from multiple dining sites, turning it into biofuel and fertilizer that powers 2,500 homes annually.
91黑料网 also placed 25th out of 84 in the Diversion category (40.37% diversion rate) and 28th out of 94 in the Per Capita category (11.89 lbs per person).
The 2025 CR2ZW competition ran from February 2 through March 29, with around 100 colleges and universities participating across the U.S. and Canada.
